United Kingdom

Monday 27th January 2009.

Weston-Super-Mare, 51 20 76 N, 02 55 99 W.  A very comfortable flight back to the UK, and our daughter Rhiain was patiently waiting in arrivals to collect us.  As you might gather it was an emotional re-union, even Rhiain and Jenny shed a tear, and borrowed a tissue each from my box of Kleenex!  It was a bit of a squeeze in Rhiain’s Renault Twingo but we managed to fit me and the luggage in, Jenny was last seen walking along the perimeter road of Heathrow, I guess she might be here (Weston-Super-Mud Mare) by Friday.  My first shock was the amount of traffic and the speed that the vehicles were doing and that was before we got out of the multi-storey car park, what didn’t surprise me was the amount of road works on the M4, some things never change.  Well so ends our world trip and what was the first stage of our nomadic journey and what a wonderful journey it was, it is impossible to describe some of the wonderful places and things we have seen, the snows in Bryce and Zion national parks in the USA, the beautiful corals and colourful fish and fantastic sunrises in the Cook Islands.  Lakes and Glaciers in New Zealand, the wide open spaces, the bush and animals of Australia and the national parks, not forgetting the botanical gardens in Singapore.  We have met some wonderful people and we make no apologies for naming some of them again, Brian and Judy our special Kiwi friends, Pat and Brian from Tasmania, Grace and Ian, Pat and Keith, Lyn, Terry and Tom from our Cape York 14 day safari, special thanks to Chocko our driver, guide and cook extraordinaire. Runa and Violet, we will never forget the laughs we had on our “Kimberley Wild” (very wild) safari and the hospitality when we met up again in Melbourne, not forgetting Gary the driver and guide.  Thanks also to Will and all the Britz/Maui team, especially David at the Hobart depot who got us back “on the road” again so quickly after our “window” incident.

What now?  Well finding and ordering a motorhome is a priority after visiting the “rellies”, we will update the website as and when we have some interesting developments to tell you about, keep looking.

Sunday 1st February 2009

Our first visit to West Country Motorhomes at Highbridge since our return, we first met Andy the salesman at the Autocruise Motorhome stand at the Boat, Caravan & Outdoor show at the NEC, Birmingham in 2007 and visited the showroom several times before we left the UK.  We had also visited the Autocruise  website whilst away and checked out the 2009 model (the Starblazer) and we had noticed changes in the layout from the 2008 model, one big change was the table and lounge set up, which although initially we thought was a change which we didn’t like, on reflection decided would be an advantage.  Whoops!!!! what we hadn’t noticed that one of requirements of the  van from our point of view was a large garage (locker) at the rear under a raised bed.  When we were speaking to Andy in the showroom he told us that the “large locker” version was not available on the 2009 model, oh no!  Did this mean we shall have to start again looking at a motorhome that suited our requirements?  We looked at all the rest of the motorhomes at WCM (West Country Motorhomes) and also enquired price and delivery etc of another Autocruise model before we returned home.

Monday 2nd February 2009.

Andy rang mid-morning with the price of the Autocruise Starblazer and also told us that Autocruise the manufactures had one in stock with the exact specification we wanted, 3 litre diesel, cab-air conditioning with cruise control, and with other extras we were really interested, but, could we live with one with a small locker?  Good news, the 2008 specification was a small locker version or the large locker (our requirement), the 2009 version DID have a large locker, OK, not as large as the 2008 version, but nevertheless a large locker, would this suit us?  Back to pouring over the specifications and the numerous magazines we have bought since arriving back.

Tuesday 3rd February 2009.

More good news!  Andy rang to tell us that Autocruise have invited us up to the factory at Mexborough near Doncaster to view the motorhome on Thursday.

Thursday 5th February 2009

After a great reunion with our son Michael, his fiancée Sharon and the bump, (we are going to be grandparents in July. Yippee!) yesterday, plus a visit in the afternoon to the dentist, and opticians, we drove to Mexborough through the snow, we had intended to visit the large shopping centre at Sheffield before arriving at the Autocruise factory but due to the inclement weather rang Jaime at Autocruise and she very kindly arranged to bring forward our appointment so we could drive back to Birmingham earlier.  Without going in to all the details the “Starblazer”  despite the changes, met all our requirements and we returned along the M1 motorway very happy.  We arrived back at my brother Brian and sister-in law Linda’s house where we are staying (thank you both) and rang Andy at WCM to confirm our interest to buy and have arranged to visit the showroom on Sunday to sign and receive the necessary paperwork.

Sunday 8th February 2009

We’ve done it!  After first seeing an Autocruise at the NEC in 2006 and visiting many shows, exhibitions, showrooms, open days, and looking at so many different manufactures models and layouts plus purchasing every motorhome magazine that ever existed we shall be the owners of an Autocruise Starblazer in March.

Monday 9th February 2009

Got the “reggo”  (sorry thought I was still in Australia), I mean registration number, If you see an Autocruise Starblazer WA09 BWM on the road, its us, beep your horn!

Tuesday 17th February 2009

A hours drive this morning saw us at exit 6 on the M42 motorway to visit The National Boat, Caravan and Outdoor Show, another hour saw us a further 4 mile to the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) car park, I knew we shouldn’t have taken notice of the motorway information signs.  We (as usual) decided to walk from the car park to the NEC proper and we eventually walked into Hall 5 (the motorhome section) at about 12:00 pm, before we started to look around we had a cup of tea and a sandwich. First stop after that of course was the Autocruise stand and the Starblazer, despite looking at this particular model over 3 years ago, we still had to remind ourselves of some of the features, especially the changes to the 2009 model which we are purchasing.  After looking at the other Autocruise models we ventured to the other stands, gathering information on types of gas installation, solar panels, folding bicycles, to name but three, we also joined “The Caravan and Camping Club” and “Caravan Club”, which, as well as having extensive camping sites throughout the UK have 2 very useful web sites and discounts on other camping “goodies”.  After  browsing all the other halls looking at boats, caravans and static park homes we left the NEC and drove to the Holiday Inn  Express at  Wall Island, Lichfield, having made one important purchase, toilet chemicals!

Thursday 19th February 2009

Another day at The National Boat, Caravan and Outdoor Show, this time meeting my brother Brain near the ticket office before spending the morning and early afternoon again walking around the show, obviously Brian wanting to see the motorhome we are buying, thank goodness he agreed with our choice!  Just the one purchase, levelling ramps and we also joined the Wildlife Trust.

Friday 20th February 2009

Yes there again, this time meeting our daughter Rhiain and boyfriend Kevin and after a cup of tea and a bun we once more tramped around the 5 NEC halls, stopping once again at the Autocruise stand to show Rhiain and Kevin the “Starblazer”.  It was great whilst we were on the stand to bump into an old (not old, old, but old) work colleague Linda Young (formerly Washbrook) whom I worked with at Hamer Ford, so we had a bit of a yarn and exchanged email addresses before saying cheerio, she did look extremely well and hopefully we may meet again, perhaps in the middle of a muddy camping field!  Purchase’s today?  A Dyson handheld vacuum cleaner (I suppose I will have to find out how to use it) and some interlocking floor mats for outside the motorhome.

Thursday 27th February 2009

Yippee, yesterday Andy from West Country Motorhomes rang to tell us our  motorhome had arrived from Autocruise so this morning we went to the service department to have a look at it.  We met Kevin the service manager (Andy’s brother) and chatted about the additional requirements we thought we may need. i.e. a Tracker (an insurance requirement for vehicles in excess of £45,000 in value) Solar Panel, addional leisure battery and extra 240 volt sockets.  Luckily, Nick their alarm system specialist was on the premises so we were able to talk to him about the security options, opting for a Sigma Alarm and a Cobratrak (tracker), unfortunately there is not enough room for a further leisure battery, however, Kevin assures us with the supplied leisure battery (120amp) and a solar panel to re-charge it (as well as it charging through the engine alternator) we should be ok, (as long as the sun shines)!  We have already sorted some of the bits and pieces we had previously used when we have been camping, which will be useful, including our Melamine dinner service, 34 years old and still as good as new.

Tuesday 17th March 2009.

Cheddar, 51 16 30 N, 2 46 59 W, (27 Mile).  The day we have been waiting for since arriving back from our world trip, we have picked up our new Motorhome!  What excitement!  We were a bit late arriving at West Country Motorhomes, Rhiain was delayed on her flight back from Tenerife, (there was a hydraulic leak on the aircraft) and didn’t arrive home till the early hours (passengers always forget that air cabin crew are also effected by delays and they are working)!  She said she needed some “beauty” sleep, I said she didn’t need it, (creep).  There it was our Fiat Autocruise Starblazer WA09 BWM our home for the foreseeable future, looking and smelling all new.  Andy was waiting for us and the first decision, outside or inside first?  We opted for the outside and Andy talked us through the items we needed to familiarise ourselves with.  This is where Rhiain came in, her brain being a lot younger than ours so we are sure what I forget, Jenny will remember, what we both forget Rhiain will remember.  Where was the electric hook up again, Andy?   Then it was time to look around the interior, cooker, refrigerator, heating, control panel and of course the television.  The instruction books were next, enough to fill a small village library, plenty of bedtime reading for Jenny! Andy went and fetched some coffee’s and then left us to go around the motorhome ourselves, looking in all the cupboards etc trying to decide where we will put, what.  A couple from Wales wanted to have a look inside which we consented to, if they buy one, we expect some commission.  After Andy returned and  went through the alarm system (how long before I set it off accidentally?) we returned to the showroom to complete the paperwork and then we were off.  First stop was the West Country Motorhomes Service Centre to pick up the Sat/Nav, (A Tom Tom which was part of the Deluxe Pack),  We still have “Betty” our Garmin Sat/Nav and we have decided to keep her, so Rhiain has appropriated the Tom Tom.  We also spoke to Nick the alarm specialist who showed us where the “secret” switch is for the Cobra Tracker, (how long before I forget that as well and have a call from the “tracker” security office?)  Next stop Rhiain’s to collect our personal effects from her home, gosh, her house suddenly looked empty, then a short drive to Cheddar and the Caravan Club site, where we will stay until Tuesday to get ourselves organised.  No cooking in the motorhome tonight we were too tired so Jenny, Rhiain and I went to the local “Brewers Fayre” and had a meal there before returning to the camp site for a early night, while Rhiain returned home.

Wednesday 18th March 2009.

If I said I had a good nights sleep I would be lying, the local church clock not helping by chiming every 15 minutes and I was still excited!  Rhiain came mid-morning to help us (and drink our tea, must remember to buy   biscuits, she complained).  After a busy morning sorting out our “bits and pieces”, Rhiain drove us to Taunton to look at storage boxes and various other requirements we needed before we returned to Weston Super Mare to collect our car from Rhiain’s, (we will use it for driving local for a short while).  Whoops, we forgot to get something out of the fridge for our evening meal so we stopped on the way to Cheddar at the “Brewers Fayre” again, 2 main meals for £9.00, so, as Rhiain would say “bargin”. Bit cool tonight so we tried the heating for the first time , very cosy, and we relaxed watched a bit of “telly” before our second night in our new home.

Thursday 19th March 2009.

A busy morning sorting out what we were going to put into the storage boxes we had purchased.  A careful measurement yesterday meant that they fitted almost exactly in the “garage” (the large storage locker with doors at either side of the motorhome, beneath our bed).  Jenny organised 3 of the boxes, I only needed to put a couple of tools in the other, we also put “antislip” linings in each of the overhead lockers.  We are so pleased with the storage we have in the motorhome, we still have some unused space, although we have not collected our box of alcohol from the storage unit yet, so we may need the room!  By lunchtime we were hungry so we walked down to Cheddar village, a lovely stroll along the River Yeo and a pleasant surprise of spotting 2 shoals of small trout, then onto a disused railway now used as a footpath before arriving in the village proper, right next to the Tesco Express.  After lunch we went into Weston-Super-Mare to purchase new pillows, we have not been comfortable since arriving back with our old ones, so a visit to Dunhelm solved the problem.  We then stopped in at Rhiain’s and cooked our evening meal there (saving our gas already).  Jenny “tried” to sort out Rhiain’s never ending problem with BT, what a useless company they are, from India (3 times), Warrington (twice), Leicester (twice), Stoke and Sheffield and despite now having been on the phone at least 3 hours in the past week, the problem has still not been resolved.  To quote one of my old sayings “it makes my blood boil”.

Friday 20th March 2009.

Another morning of getting things in the motorhome safely stored and into appropriate places.  We also sat in the front seats and familiarised ourselves with the controls, (we will leave the “mode” switch and the cruise control until another day) before Rhiain came over and we all walked into the village.  We then decided to continue the walk along to the “touristy” part of the village the street up to the gorge, we didn’t get too far before finding the “Cheddar Cheese Factory” and I was “forced” to step in and try some of their cheese samples.  We started sampling with the mild and went along to the strong, I particularly enjoyed the smoked, whilst Jenny and Rhiain liked the blue (I wouldn’t even try that, ugh!).  However, we did buy both and with the fresh French bread we had purchased earlier we had a great lunch.  A relaxed afternoon at the local garden centre where Rhiain purchased some plants for her aquarium before we returned to the camp site for our evening meal.

Saturday 21st March 2009.

We are getting there with our organising, today we drove down to Weston to purchase some more plastic containers for different storage uses and we had bought from “Staples” a rack to stand at the rear of  the passenger seat to put our maps and caravan site books, it was so successful we went back today for another one for the back of the drivers seat to put our reference books on birds, butterflies, plants, etc, in. I am not casting aspersions (I wouldn’t  dare) on Jenny’s cooking, but we also purchased a fire blanket to fix near the cooker.  We also “attempted” to use the new O2 mobile broadband, as you can see by the update date we were not very successful, so back to the drawing board, we are not sure that the “dongle” sim card is fitted correctly, we questioned the salesman in the O2 shop who insists that it is, we remain unconvinced and will wait until we visit Lichfield next week and go to the O2 shop there, they may be more helpful!

“Happy Mothers Day Mum” from Rhiain and Michael XXX.

Sunday 22nd March 2009.

Jenny received wonderful bouquet of flowers for mothers day and we have borrowed a vase from Rhiain and they will look lovely on the table in the motorhome, we have already worked out how we will transport them when we move on Tuesday.  We went to the local “MacDonald’s” for mothers day lunch, (no not really, we just went there to try and use the WiFi, that’s another story).  We then went back to the garden centre we visited yesterday to purchase some fish (no not to eat, to put in Rhiain’s aquarium).  I have kept tropical fish in the past and still enjoy looking at them in a aquarium, it is so relaxing. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Monday 23rd March 2009.

Still a few things to sort out, fitted a small safe for our documents and other paperwork, (no, not going to tell you where) tidied the book box and our maps and fitted some more anti-slip matting in to the rest of the lockers, the rest of the day we have relaxed, (reading instruction manuals) and even had time to watch a film on television, we cannot get all the channels at present, but we know that television reception is poor at this camp site, we could have bought a co-axial cable to fit in to our site power box, but watching television is not on our priority list, at present we will make do with the channels with the stronger signal, (just a pity I cannot view TelevisionX).  Tomorrow we will drive up to the Midlands, our first “proper” drive, we will let you know how we get on.

Tuesday 24th March 2009.

Wythall, Near Birmingham, 52 22 45 N, 1 53 56 W, ( 116 Mile).

We left the campsite at 9:45am after a careful departure making sure we had done everything correctly before we left.  We have printed ourselves a “departure check list” which we went through to make sure we had not forgotten anything which includes items like, turning off the gas, to switching off the tracker, refrigerator door locked etc.  Jenny drove the Fiesta to Rhiain’s where we are leaving it and we collected a few items to put in to our storage unit, which we are not using at present.  A nice smooth drive (the engine is very quiet) up to Wythall, I did wonder why the trip figure on the speedo' was not moving, then found I was looking at MPG data instead, another look at the Fiat instruction book is obviously required.  We stopped at Strensham on the M5, only really to see what the parking was like for a motorhome, dead easy, there was parking for caravans and there were more motorhomes than caravan’s so we parked there, taking advantage of the toilets at the same time.  We could also park there overnight for £10 which isn’t bad.  We arrived at the Caravan Club camp site at lunch time, so after some delicious smoked cheddar cheese rolls, we found a suitable semi-permanent place for “Betty” the Sat/Nav and also programmed the radio with “our my favourite stations and set the bass/treble etc.  Still no luck with the Internet and our O2 mobile broadband, we will sort this out some time, we thought it would be easy back in the UK, we are surprised this (at present) doesn’t appear to be the case!

Wednesday 25th March 2009.

Kingsbury Water Park, 52 34 15 N, 1 42 21 W, (98 Mile).  First stop this morning was Lichfield to see our son Michael and his fiancée Sharon, they were obviously excited to see our motorhome, however we didn’t invite them for a four course meal,  We were excited to see how much “the bump” had grown in Sharon’s tummy!  We then had a drive to Ryton-On-Dunsmore near Coventry to AS Bikes, these were the folding bicycles that we saw at the Boat, Caravan and Outdoor Show at the NEC, Birmingham in February which we liked, however we could not try them at the show (Health and Safety Rules, not surprisingly when Jenny gets on a bike) so we were able to try them around the yard at AS Bikes, we were very comfortable on them and we are now the owners of two Metallic Blue Explorer Plus folding bikes. “Go Outdoors” the camping superstore was our next stop, the “Camping Club” does not allow clothes lines hung from trees, etc, or in our case from the motorhome to the car (we had our knuckles rapped by the warden at Cheddar), so we purchased a rotary clothes line, very portable and very light, stowing away in its own little bag, Brian and Judy (our Kiwi friends) have just had a clothes line bracket fixed to “Mammal” (their motorhome) they just peg Brian’s underpants to an attached line and they dry in the wind as they motor around the New Zealand countryside, seems a better idea to me, could do the same with Jenny’s panties as we motor up the M5!  One last stop before a night at the very pleasant Kingsbury Water Park, Camping and Caravan Club site was at another camping store, Jackson’s of Old Arley, a store we have used for camping equipment for at least 40 years, I dread to think how much we have spent there, this time however, 4 eggcups, a mixing bowl and a kettle (for when we are on gas only) didn’t break the bank.

Thursday 26th March 2009.

Lichfield, 52 41 86 N, 1 50 58 W, (20 mile). A very short drive this morning to the storage unit at Tamworth, there were a few items we have decided not to keep in the motorhome and wanted to leave in storage and we also wanted to collect some summer clothes, (a bit premature me thinks) also we had an Opticians appointment for Jenny in Lichfield , which we then had to rearrange because of a computer being down, (back to the reading board on the back of the door, with one hand over the eye, I say).  At last we think we have sorted out the mobile broadband, thanks to Mark at the Lichfield branch of O2.  He painstakingly went through all the settings on our laptop, spending almost an hour attempting to connect with O2-UK, in the end he identified the problem, the USB dongle was faulty, after substituting for another one we at last had those important “invisible waves” from the phone mast to our laptop.  Coffee was the next priority at our favourite coffee shop Café Nero and we were able to use the laptop to catch up with emails and internet banking, hopefully we will be able to update the website shortly, although the signal speed may be a problem.  We are staying the night in Lichfield, at the Cathedral Grange Campsite and walked from there into Lichfield a much longer walk than we thought, especially walking back with more storage boxes, groceries and the laptop, next time we will jump on the bus and make use of our free passes!

Friday 27th March 2009.

Kingsbury Water Park, 52 34 15 N, 1 42 21 W, (32 Mile), Today we went to the “Ordinance Survey Outdoor Show at the NEC, what a disappointment, we have been in previous years and it has always been very good and interesting, with plenty of stands with a huge variety of things to look at.  Not this time, it was only in one hall and unless we were scuba divers, mountain board enthusiasts, climbers, wanted to join the Army, Navy or Air force (wouldn’t mind the Air force actually if they would allow me to fly a fast jet), or even be a member of the Boy Scout’s (which I wasn’t) or Girl Guide’s (which I wish I was) it was of no interest to us.  In previous years also they had interesting people giving talks, Brian Blessed, Sir Chris Bonnington and Ben Fogle to name just three, not this time, we actually left before 1:00 pm having seen everything we wanted to see (or not as was the case), we shan’t bother going again.  We decided because of an appointment in Lichfield on Tuesday that we would spend the weekend back at Kingsbury Water Park, we had unpacked the bicycles at Anchor Storage, (thanks Christine, for getting rid of our rubbish) so once we got to the camp site we assembled them and tried them around the site, before we put them in their carrying bags, hopefully (weather permitting) we will try them properly tomorrow, we also need to buy safety helmets before riding too far on them.

Saturday 28th March 2009.

Up early this morning, 5:00 am, well it is the start of the F1 Grand Prix season and I wanted to see the practice from Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia, how we wish we could have been there at the right time to see it, still we did race the Britz VW camper van around the circuit when we were there in December, I think I would have got on the grid in front of Hamilton’s Maclaren, lets hope they solve the aerodynamic problems quickly.  One thing that has not changed, me doing my “Sherpa” impression and taking all the washing over to the laundry, we have had to use the dryer, it doesn’t dry here as quickly as in Australia, hanging it out wasn’t an option with today’s showery weather.  We needed a newspaper (for the TV magazine) and a tin of pineapple so we took the opportunity to try out the new bikes along the paths to Kingsbury village, we were most impressed, very smooth and despite the small 20 inch wheels coped well with the bumps,  The same can’t be said for my “bum” by the time  we got back, it’s a long time since I rode a bike, Jenny chose a different shaped “Gel ladies” saddle for her bike, I think I may pinch that one next time we go out, I wonder if she’ll notice?

Sunday 29th March 2009

Up before 6:00 am and also loosing an hours sleep, this time to watch the actual F1 grand prix proper from Melbourne, worth it to see Brawn GP cars coming first and second, even more pleasing that a team manager I have always admired is Ross Brawn and both the drivers Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button.  Another re-sort of the “garage” trying the bicycles in a different way and measuring up for a plastic storage box to put the spare (guest) bedding in, instead of having it in the overhead lockers above the cab.  We also tried out the new rotary washing line, I must have assembled it correctly as it didn’t fall to pieces.  After a relaxing afternoon, we decided to watch the television, or at least we switched it on just before 8:00pm because Jenny wanted to see “Lewis”, I wanted to watch Yellowstone but as it is repeated tomorrow night, I, we, Jenny, decided that I would watch it then!  Guess what, we hadn’t changed our wrist watches, forgot all about BST and Jenny missed a hour of Lewis, served her right.

Monday 30th March 2009

Lichfield, 52 41 86 N, 1 50 58 W, (16 mile). Another trip back to Lichfield, via Tamworth to do some shopping at Ventura Park.  We managed to park at Asda and we walked over to Homebase (hooks, screws and storage box), Halfords (safety helmets and lock for bicycle), Comet (Dyson mini-vacuum accessory kit) and groceries from Asda, before stopping at the storage unit (again) to leave a few more items we have decided not to take with us.  It was late afternoon before we eventual arrived in Lichfield, just in time to walk (again) down to the town for a few other bits and pieces, (yes, would you believe we are almost organised).  I knew I should not have put that last sentence in yesterday, he who laughs last, etc, etc, I completely forgot about my programme “Yellowstone” and only saw the last 15 minutes and it was the last of the series, never mind I will just have to visit there instead!

Tuesday 31st March 2009

Kingsbury Water Park, 52 34 15 N, 1 42 21 W, (17 Mile), Yes the distances are shorter than those earlier, I have plucked up courage to drive to the camp site along the narrower lane, complete with hump-back canal bridge, saving about 4 mile and also missing the major traffic island above the M42 at junction 9.  After an early morning appointment in Lichfield (the reason for us staying at the Cathedral Grange camp site overnight), we made our way back to Kingsbury Water Park.  We had a great afternoon with my brother Brian and his wife Linda visiting us, it’s a small world, Joan one of the wardens at the campsite is Linda’s cousin who she had not seen for about 20 years!  Brian just had to try the new bike, he came back grinning from ear to ear and puffing like an old goat, I explained to him it had got gears (he hadn’t noticed , not having ridden a bike for about 50 years) and away he disappeared again, arriving back so enthusiastic he is going to buy himself the same model.

Wednesday 1st April 2009

We have not been swimming for a long time, it was such a lovely morning we went for a swim in the lake, we forgot our swim-suits so we had to go naked.  A  bit of DIY today, hooks to fit near the door for keys (not left there overnight) and a clothes hook in the bathroom, we also purchased brackets to fix in the garage to hold an assortment of “tube like” bits, everything seems to be coming together well, we will shortly be able to relax and enjoy the motorhome and have time to pursue our many pastimes.  We did use our bicycles this afternoon, riding the many paths around the lakes, we also found a nature reserve with bird hides, we will certainly come back to Kingsbury Water Park and explore further later in the year.  It is ironic that we have lived so close all these years and although having fished the lakes, didn’t realise how much it had to offer.  If you believed the first

sentence check the date!

Thursday 2nd April 2009

Cheddar, 51 16 30 N, 2 46 59 W, (179 Mile).  A easy run down to Somerset, and I experimented with the cruise control on the M5, what a “boon” it will be on the longer distances and how we wish we had got it on the motorhome in Australia.  Switch it on, set the speed and that’s it, with the armrests of the “captains” seat down it was so comfortable, if we had got the gas switched on, I could have gone and made a cup of tea!  After a quick stop at Cribbs Causeway to buy Rhiain’s birthday present, we continued to the “Caravan Club” camp site at Cheddar, where we stopped when we picked up the Starblazer, we managed to get a pitch on the other side of the site this time, much better as we are in the sunshine rather than in the shade of the trees, quite the opposite  to what we did in the high temperature’s of Australia, where we sort the shade.  Rhiain and Kevin came over late afternoon and helped us with the awning, something we had intended to do as soon as we got the chance, at least Rhiain (thank goodness) remembered the instructions that Andy at West Country Motorhomes gave us

Have a very Happy Birthday Rhiain, Lots of Love from Mum & Dad XXXX

Friday 3rd April 2009

I did it whilst we were away last year and I am still doing it now……… talking, yes,  a 5 minute task this morning of washing and drying the breakfast dishes took about 30 minutes, Jenny in the end came to see where I was, she thought (perhaps hopefully) that I had left her, but I did have a good yarn with the other people that were in the dishwashing room!  After finally finishing “my chores”, we walked down (with one of the couples I had been talking to) to Cheddar village for bread, milk and a birthday card, before driving to Rhiain’s in the Fiesta (Kevin drove it to the campsite for us yesterday)  to give Rhiain her birthday present.  At last, Rhiain having at last sorted out her BT broadband problems, we have finally managed to get on a decent connection with the internet, although we have purchased O2 mobile broadband (see above), it is to slow to update the website, we will have to have a re-think how we will do it, as part of the O2 package we have unlimited access to “My Cloud” broadband, it looks like MacDonalds beckons for a cup of tea and their WIFI zone.

Saturday 4th April 2009

A relaxing day, still needed to be “up and at them” before the practice on BBC1 of the Malaysian Grand Prix which started at 9:00am, how much better on “The Beeb” without adverts and the new combination of David Coultard and Eddie Jordan both the pundits were both informative and amusing, having Fleetwood Mac’s  “The Chain” return as the opening theme tune was also welcome. I did have a couple of DIY jobs to do on the Motorhome, fix the fire blanket in the table stowage cupboard and a bracket in the garage for a very important piece of equipment, my fishing holdall.  Wow, I even had time this afternoon to read a newspaper, then I spotted a speck of dirt on the motorhome so decided to wash it all over, well not quite all over, as it is much too tall for me to reach, plus the water off the sponge was dripping down my arm, we will have to invest in a long handled mop/sponge whwich we have seen at some of the caravan shows.

Sunday 5th April 2009

Up before 9:00 am to watch the Grand Prix, suffice to say it was both exciting (because of the rain) and disappointing (also because of the rain), work that one out!  This afternoon we drove to Tesco to top up our groceries, wrong decision, there was a cycle race on the sea front of Weston Super Mare, so we got caught up in a diversion, wish now we had gone to Morrison’s, I blame Jenny.  We then went to Rhiain’s, we had bought her a Kodak Picture Frame for her birthday, we should have been able to link by wireless between her computer and the picture frame, wrong we have tried for several hours to get it to work to no avail.  We even tried the software on our own computer but it still didn’t work, back to the drawing board.  Tomorrow we have booked a campsite in Dulverton on the edge of Exmoor, see you there.

Monday 6th April 2009

Exmoor House Caravan Club Site, Dulverton, 51 02 48 N, 3 33 20 W, (63 Mile).  Good practice with the motorhome today, after the easy drive the short distance along the M5 motorway, we then had to negotiate the narrower lanes to the campsite at Dulverton,  A very pretty and quiet site with views up a valley and a pitch overlooking the River Barle.  How nice it will be tonight with the sound of water again as we drift off to sleep.  Although it is raining quite heavily at the moment so all we may hear is the sound of the rain hammering down on the roof of the motorhome, a different noise to Australia, when it rained on the motorhome roof there, being metal (as opposed to fibreglass) it sounded like a million nails coming down!  Hopefully, although the weather forecast is not that great, tomorrow we will be able to either walk or cycle around the area.  Talking off bicycles, my brother Brian rang today to tell me he had bought the same model collapsible bike which we have bought, he was a bit more sensible than me, he went for the “comfy” saddle, I said I thought he had plenty of padding in that region anyway!

Tuesday 7th April 2009

Couldn’t get the television to work last night, then I had a thought, is this part of the country on digital? No, switched to analogue and away we went, must remember that next time, wouldn’t normally bother but I wanted to watch the Man’ United match tonight. A short walk into the village this morning, habits never change, first stop the Exmoor Park Information Centre to get some (free) leaflets and brochures on the local area, we did however purchase a Ordnance Survey Map to add to our growing collection. Next stop the bakery, but were was it? A 10 minute walk away from the village “next to the weir” the lady in the info’ centre told us. Surprise, surprise, we found bakery straight away, Jenny ordered a loaf of bread, “is there anything else?” the lady behind the counter asked, “no thank you” Jenny replied, “at least I don’t, he (me) would have all the cakes in the cabinet, “Oh, what a shame” the lady replied, and offered me, which I snatched off the plate, a piece of Cinnamon cake. No! I didn’t give Jenny any. The rest of the day we relaxed, Jenny baked some scones, I fitted a extension lead to the power to make using a multitude of electric plugs easier and then I watched the match!

Wednesday 8th April 2009

Lynton Camping and Caravan Club Site, Lynton, 51 24 94 N, 3 51 98 W, (46 Mile). A pleasant drive across Exmoor, stopping at a lay-by for tea and biscuits before arriving a Lynton at 1:15 pm. We decided after lunch to walk the mile into Lynton Village for bread and milk, the signpost said 1 mile to Lynton, however we are sure that the “Costcutter” supermarket was at least another mile further AND down a very steep hill. What goes down, must go up and the walk back to the campsite was very tiring, how quickly we have seem to have lost the fitness we had in Australia, a big effort is now required to get it back, with the bikes and the walking we are sure we will both manage it. A surprise tonight, tried the O2-UK mobile broadband had the connection showed as “excellent” and we Jenny was even able to update the “online banking”. We did notice yesterday on the walk into Lynton (which we have almost recovered from) that at the top of the hill there were 4 transmitters, as these are only approximately ½ mile away from the campsite, we can only presume that one of them is a “O2” transmitter.

Thursday 9th April 2009

A very wet night was followed by a very wet day, well it is nearly Easter, needless to say we have not been very far today, actually only to the amenities block.  It has given us chance, once again to peruse the instruction manuals and attempt to make sense of some of the more technical items, i.e., the bass on the radio, (joking).  I am still, would you believe also sorting out the photographs,  I have still a few thousand (really) to look at and either delete or categorise, before transferring them to CD, the sophisticated television, (another manual to re-read) which seems to do everything except make tea, accepts photographs on either disc or compact flash so we are looking forward to seeing them on the “big” screen before to long.

Friday 10th April 2009

No improvement with the weather, although this afternoon did become a little brighter, we therefore did very similar to yesterday, read and relax, I had a in- depth look at the new photography book I had bought, without sounding boring I am going to change to another format of capturing an image and hopefully improve the quality of the photograph’s, unfortunately it won’t show on the website because to be able to upload the photograph onto the web page, I have to reduce the image quality.

Saturday 11th April 2009

A very cold night, but that was because the skies cleared and we woke up to a frost, with not a cloud in the sky.  After breakfast we walked down the very steep hill into Lynton for bread and milk, plus “The Sun” to get a free TV guide, we decided to have a cup of tea in a small café whilst we were there, we also indulged in a Hot-cross bun each at the same time. The decision was then made to walk the coastal path, through the “Valley of Rocks” and along the zigzag bridle path back to the camp site, we also stopped for lunch on the way, a fresh baguette and Wiltshire ham, sitting overlooking the valley, magic!  Although the walk back was a much longer distance than the way down to Lynton, at least we didn’t need crampons to climb back up the hill.

Sunday 12th April 2009

A very lazy day, continued studying my photography book and actually finished the Sir Jackie Stewart autobiography “Winning is not Enough” that Rhiain bought me for Christmas 2007.  A fantastic read, which I would recommend even for those people not interested in motor racing. Jenny also finished reading an autobiography written by Sara Henderson, a lady who despite all sorts of trials and tribulations succeeded in successfully building a homestead in the Northern Territory, Australia a book which we picked up at a “book swop” whilst we were there, another good read and made the more interesting as we could relate to some of the places up in the “NT”, that were mentioned.  For the third night running, I walked down a couple of meadows to take a photo of the sunset, I learnt a lesson from last night I wore a fleece and a hat, while I waited for the sun to go down!

Monday 13th April 2009.

Well it is a bank holiday so we deserved to lie in bed, and then continued where we left off yesterday, relaxing, reading and other than a short walk we didn’t do much else, the weather however has improved today, although it is very windy.  A couple arrived next to us with a caravan and they were really struggling to get their awning erected, so we went out and helped them, we thought everything was OK when we left them but 10 minutes later we were out there again, this time we waited until most of the holding down pegs were driven in, not helped by the site being hard-standing, not conducive for hammering stakes in, David and Shirley were very grateful.  Another walk down through the “play field” to take a photographs of the sunset, the sheep in the field are getting to recognise me!

Tuesday 14th April 2009.

We had originally only booked the site until today, but whose counting? We have decided to stay an additional night, Jenny went to pay the extra fees, how long does it take to pay some cash over?  Me thinks she spent an  awful lot of time talking!  After breakfast we walked down (and down and down) to Lynton, after a quick shop for some baguettes for lunch and also deciding to have coffee and cake at the little café, we walked even further down to Lynmouth, for our overseas friends, Lynton and Lynmouth is really one town, one part at the top of the hill (Lynton) and the other (Lynmouth) at the bottom with a small harbour and rocky shore.  We visited the memorial hall where the history of the tragic flood of 1952 which claimed over 30 lives was displayed and included a scale model of the area, prior to the disaster.  Interesting to note that part of the tragedy was blamed on the building of a hotel, which narrowed the West River Lyn near a point were it met the East river Lyn.  Twenty-four hours of torrential rain and a thunderstorm (in August) bringing down rocks weighing in excess of 50 tons in a torrent of water, mud and other debris. Strangely enough, Jenny although only six at the time could not remember the tragedy, I can remember it quite clearly, I can’t however remember what we had for tea last night!  After a browse around the shops and a very interesting art gallery, we cheated partly on the way back to Lynton, we rode up on the cliff railway, a marvellous feat of engineering, powered by water, built in the late 1800’s.  After a strenuous walk back up to the camp site, ( the camp manager telling us that the hill is called “Cardiac Hill”, which doesn’t surprise me one bit),  we thoroughly deserved a sit outside the motorhome with a cup of tea and a biscuit, chatting to our neighbour David.  The sky looked inviting tonight for a good sunset, but I also wanted to watch the Chelsea v Liverpool football match, I walked down the field and whilst I was away Liverpool scored 2 goals, typical, Murphy’s Law, still the sunset was stunning so I didn’t really mind and the sheep were pleased to see me.

Wednesday 15th April 2009.

Mortehoe, Damage Barton Camping and Caravan Park, 51 12 15 N, 4 11 30, W (24 Mile).  A very short drive this morning, stopping at a large Tesco superstore on the way for re-provisioning, because we had stopped an extra day at Lynton we have run out of some important food items, (I got the blame).  However we only had an apple, pineapple and grapes for breakfast, no orange, banana and strawberries, we didn’t even a have crust of bread for toast.  If you think that a fresh fruit salad sounds a healthy breakfast, you’re right, it is what we enjoyed and got used to in Australia (Jenny especially as I prepare it) and we see no reason to change.  Damage Barton?  No idea where the name is from, we will have to find out, the camp site does boast beautiful views over to the sea, only trouble is with the murky weather, we can see no further than the end of the next field, no sunset tonight!  The first thing we do after switching the power on and organising ourselves is have a cup of tea (we all have our priorities)  We should have read the information brochure first before we did, it was a bit chilly when we arrived so we put the heating on, whoops! The site has only 10amp power, so with the heating on and the kettle we overloaded the site power box, I then had to walk up to the amenities block and get the keys to reset the switch, well it did warn us in the information pack, we will know work out our power loading for all our appliances (or rather I’ll as my brother Brian to do it).

Thursday 16th April 2009

Why is it that sea level is always down hill from a camp site, there must be a simple explanation!  We walked all the way down to Woolacombe a place I had not visited since I was a schoolboy in short trousers.  It was a great walk along the lane, through a large holiday park, and a National Trust woodland before joining the public footpath into the town.  We didn’t stay to long, we had a cuppa at a café and then sat on the front eating our sandwiches and Jenny’s homemade ginger cake, I did share a bit of sandwich with a family of Jackdaws, the cake?  No chance!  We returned to Damage Barton “clearance in a wooded valley” via the “ Donkey Path”, named after a lady originally from Lichfield. another very picturesque alternative, before eventually re-joining the original path to the camp site.  Another great sunset tonight, with the sun setting over Lundy Island, no sheep, but a sign close by saying “Adders nest here keep out”, might investigate that further tomorrow.

Friday 17th April 2009.

We have had the motorhome a month today, we feel really at home in it already and are looking  forward so much to many more happy months and years in it.  A lady camping in a trailer tent was interested in looking at the motorhome so I showed her around it, they were leaving today so her husband also came and had a chat with us before they left.  We had purchased leaflets from the camp site on local walks so we decided this morning to walk to the village of Mortehoe, take the cliff top path to Rockham Beach, a wonderful array of rocks and cliffs, found the rusty remains of the SS Collier which was wrecked here in 1914, as you can imagine there was little left of it, we continued to the lighthouse at Bull Point, were we sat on a bench to have our lunch, (no ginger cake left, but the malt loaf was OK.  What a wonderful walk, primroses, bluebells and many other wild flowers were in abundance, we returned along the Kinever Valley, alive with birds with a small crystal clear stream, trickling along the bottom and then along the edge of the fields full of spring lambs back to Damage Barton.

Saturday 18th April 2009

Mortehoe, Warcombe Farm Camping Park, 51 11 11 N, 4 11 25 W, (3 Mile).  Chinese Grand Prix practice, so once again I was up before 6:00am to watch, Jenny stayed in bed!  We now need to explain why we have only moved 3 mile, which included going in the opposite direction to call at the village shop.  On Wednesday Jenny I thought that this was the campsite that we were going to and had booked, it was only when we stopped that we weren’t sure.  Jenny went into the reception and enquired where the Damage Barton campsite was, (it was actually the next turning along the lane).  The manager was very pleasant and “jokey” and wanted us to stay, Jenny explained that  we had already booked at the other site. We were however very impressed with the camp site (especially as it has a fishing lake) and the accountant in charge (Jenny) worked out that over 3 days it would be £10 cheaper, we have decided therefore to stay here for a few days.  We also have 16 amp power, so I won’t need to traipse up to the amenities block to get the key to the power box, when Jenny switches the kettle and heater on together, (I think she did it on purpose)! We are on a fantastic pitch, surrounded by bushes and trees, nobody either side of us, very impressive amenities and great views, the weather is getting warmer too.

Sunday 19th April 2009.

Up at 7:00 am to watch the grand prix, thank goodness that after next week the grand prix circuit moves to Europe and the start times will be more to my liking, i.e. I won’t have to (have to ?) get up so early.  We bought so many motorhome magazines in the last few months and although we have read them, we thought it would be a good idea to re-read them and pull out the information we wanted to keep and as it has probably been one of the warmest days of the year, certainly the warmest since we have had the motorhome, we took the opportunity to sit outside in the sun and sort through the magazines.  This is when we appreciate the decision we have made to buy the motorhome and visit all the places we want to see, everybody else has packed up and gone home after the Easter holiday, other than 2 or 3 others we are the only other people here and have the place almost to ourselves.

Monday 20th April 2009.

The first opportunity today to use our senior citizens concessionary travel (read, old age pensioners free bus pass) card having decided to go to Barnstable for the day.  The lady at the reception gave us a bus time table and told us it would be better to walk up to the “corner” as there were more buses from there.  We duly walked the mile up to the bus stop and waited for the bus, when it came along I asked the driver “does this bus go to Barnstable”?.  To which he replied, “yes, after we go to Woolacombe”, 5 minutes later we passed the bus stop outside the camp site!  The bus goes in a anti-clockwise direction, passing through the village of Mortehoe, calling at Woolacombe, before re-joining the main road to Barnstable.  At least we were sitting on the bus, instead of standing at the bus stop which was actually approximately 200 yards further along the road to the one we were originally waiting at 30 minutes or so previous.  We stayed at Barnstable for the afternoon, strolling around the many shops, having a very nice carvery meal at a hotel and walking along the River Taw, before catching the bus back, with the bus stopping right outside the camp site.  Strange, but true, we were talking to a couple of people at the bus station with a motorhome on another camp site close-by, they were from Cardiff, there travel pass cannot be used in England . . . . . . and we call it the United Kingdom, another couple used their free passes, but had to pay for their 2 Dalmatians dogs!

Tuesday 21st April 2009

Yet again we have decided to stay at a camp site an extra couple of days, at this rate it will take us the next year to drive around the south coast. We still want to cycle part of the Devon “coast to coast” and we are saving our energy today to tackle it tomorrow, all we have done today is read, listen to music and I have edited some of my photographs.

Wednesday 22nd April 2009

Well we managed it, cycling into Ilfracombe  along the marked cycleway which is part of the Devon coast to coast route, most of the way along the old Waterloo to Ilfracombe railway line, disused since the  1970’s when Dr Beeching wielded his axe on our railway system, from which (in my opinion, for what it’s worth) we have never recovered.  As usual it was down hill so we hardly needed to work hard on the way, coming back was a different story.  I always imagined Ifracombe to be miles of beach, however for the most part it was small sandy coves and rocks, very pretty.  It was lunch time when we arrived so after a walk around we found a small café with a pleasant outdoor seating area (we needed to be outside so we could park our bikes next to us (somebody, who shall remain nameless, forgot the cycle lock) where we had a cup of tea and a hot buttered teacake.  After a look at the small harbour, we cycled back through the town and re-joined the cycleway, stopping at one of the numerous benches to eat our “proper” lunch before tackling the climb back to Mortehoe and our camp site.  In truth the ride back was quite easy and we only “walked” our bikes on a couple of particularly steep sections the railway sleepers did however play havoc with my important credentials, or was it just the hard saddle!  A haircut was next on the agenda when we arrived back, the grounds man was using a grass strimmer  near to us,  Jenny suggested I just lay down and let him do the job, I wasn’t amused, come to think of it though it may have been safer than Jenny with her scissors!

Thursday 23rd April 2009

Wooda Farm Holiday Park, Bude, 50 50 66 N, 4 30 95 W, (51 Mile). First stop this morning was at the Tesco Superstore in Braunton, a brand new store with plenty of parking, it certainly is a pleasure to shop (do I really mean that) at these stores and because we are organised with our shopping list we are around and out in 15 minutes.  An outlet shopping centre was advertised at Bideford so we thought we would stop and have a look around there, other than 2 coffees, 3 cheap CD’s and some Cadbury’s chocolate  we didn’t purchase anything else and didn’t stop too long.  The Cobra Tracker works!  There is a secret switch, which we use when we stop, this prevents the vehicle being stolen even if a thief has the keys and can drive it away,  at 2:00 pm we drove out of the car park, Jenny, we, I forgot to turn off the switch, at 2:06 pm Jenny’s mobile rang, it was the tracker call centre, wanting to know whether we were in the vehicle, obviously Jenny replied “yes”, after also confirming our identity with our password they were happy, good response eh?   We also know that it works!  We are at a camp site that we haven’t been to for about 15 years, we have spent some happy days here with our children, tomorrow we will have a walk and see what’s changed.

Friday 24th April 2009

Not up to early this morning, but eventually late morning Jenny caught up with washing, while I had a tidy up of the motorhome.  We then went to look at the new caravan and camping accessory shop that had been built before we did the “wood land” walk and we saw 2 pixies!  I should explain, the campsite owners place small 2 inch high assorted coloured pixie figures along the wood land walk, hidden around tree roots, crevices and branches for children to find, our children when they were small loved to walk through the woods and got very excited when either found one.  I was excited when we found two!  Great news, Rhiain is coming to stay for the weekend.

Saturday 25th April 2009

A sensible time for the Grand Prix practice from Bahrain to start this morning on the BBC, 11:10pm, a good job really as the rain and wind kept us both awake during the night, something I guess, we have to get used to.  Rhiain arrived just in time for the start, it seems a long time (2007) since we both sat together to watch our favourite sport and we thoroughly enjoyed it.  We drove down to Bude this afternoon (approx’ 2 miles) and had a wander around, amazingly little seems to have changed since we were here last, Rhiain even recognised some of the café’s  we used to visit, (oh, to have the memory of the young).  “The Coffee Pot” especially she remembered as after an early morning drive from the Midlands, we normally had breakfast there before continuing to Wooda Farm to erect our tents.  Unfortunately it was very cold and windy so we didn’t stay long before returning to the warmth of the motorhome.

Sunday 26th April 2009

A relaxed day (yes another), Jenny and Rhiain drove down to the “Cornish Pasty” bakery in Bude and bought some for lunch, delicious and as big as rugby balls.  We watched the Bahrain Grand prix lunchtime (well done, Jenson) and afterwards walked along the “Wooda” woodland trail in the afternoon, Rhiain hadn’t forgotten the walk and was just as excited as she was 20 years ago when she found 6 pixies and a gnome and she even took some photographs of them, the one thing she couldn’t do was climb into the old tree house, she’s a  trifle bigger now!  It is a wonderful mixed wood, Orchids, Bluebells, Primroses, Wood Anemones were just some of the diversity of wild flowers that we saw on the hour long walk.

Monday 27th April 2009

I have decided (at last) to pursue one of my old pastimes of coarse fishing, not having fished principally because of work commitments since 1994.  We therefore caught the bus into Bude (using our free pass) and went to the post office to buy a licence, very strange, but true, the guy behind the counter guessed my Christian name, we (and he) were amazed, all I need to do now is catch some fish!  We were going to walk back practically straight away, because the bus did not return to Wooda for another 2½ hours, however, an enormous black cloud was fast coming in from over the sea, we therefore decided to have a cup of tea and a toasted sandwich in a little bakery shop, before walking the 3 mile back (uphill again) to the camp site.  We stayed in the motorhome for the rest of the day as the weather was so wet and windy, it even hailed!

Tuesday 28th April 2009

Trewethett Farm Caravan Club Site, Near Tintagel, 50 40 51 N, 4 43 65 W, (29 mile).  First stop this morning was a “top up” of food at Morrison’s, I waited in the car park while Jenny shopped, as the parking spaces were very limited.  St Tinney’s Camp site was our next destination, a place we had camped at many years ago when Rhiain and Michael were quite small, unfortunately the camping field is grass and was very wet so the owner advised us not to stay, the last thing we would have wanted was to get bogged down.  It was much improved since the last time we were there, it having gone into receivership with the owner we had first met, we were not surprised, what we were surprised about was that he had lived in Exeter, courtesy of her majesty for 5 years for dealing in drugs, hoping to earn money to keep the camp site “afloat”. We have therefore continued to Tintagel, what a fabulous camp site with fantastic views of the rugged coastline just outside the door of the motorhome and we  have managed to get a pitch right on the headland, we haven’t camped in a place in such a scenic location since we were in the “Snowies” in New South Wales, I was taking photographs of the sunset and was still able to watch the “footie” on the television at the same time, clever eh!

Wednesday 29th April 2009

This is such a wonderful location we have decided to stay here for a week, it will also mean we have a base over the bank holiday.  It started  off quite bright this morning so we decided to walk the coastal path into Tintagel.  What a great walk, there was a very scenic part of the walk (part of the Cornwall Coastal Walk) called the “Rocky Valley” which was particularly good with a rocky stream flowing through cliffs covered with many colourful wild flowers down to the sea, it would be an artist’s dream.  We past a signpost saying, Tintagel 1¼ mile we must have gone at least another ½ mile and saw another sign stating the same distance, (no, we didn’t go round in a circle) at last though we reached the town and had a stroll along the main street, filled with mostly souvenir shops of King Arthur (reputed to belong here) and Cornish Pasty bakeries.  After returning the length of the main street to buy some of the Cornish pasties, which we could see being made through the window of the bakery we waited at the bus stop for the local bus which runs to Boscastle, the bus driver was very helpful although there wasn’t a “proper” bus stop at the lane to the camp site, he stopped at the top of the lane anyway, just as well as we walked the short distance to the site and then to the motorhome it started to rain, it hasn’t stopped since!

Thursday 30th April 2009

This morning we thought it would be a “stop at home” morning, it was so wet, outside the motorhome was a shallow pond, hope it goes before we go next Tuesday!  Jenny had decided to do some baking, I wasn’t going to argue, fresh scones and ginger cake, yummee, I had decided to do some work on my photographs on the computer, (I know what you’re thinking, hasn’t he finished that little job yet, NO).  All change, by the time we had breakfast, actually we did get up rather later than intended, Jenny was reading and I was listening to Mike Oldfield’s  “Hergest Ridge” (never heard of it, you don’t know what you’re missing), anyway where was I?  Ah yes, all change, the rain has stopped and the sun has come out, Jenny still baked, (thank goodness), I cleaned the outside of the motorhome, which obviously takes quite a long time, I still haven’t managed to reach the top, we are still deciding which long handled washing device to purchase, by the time I had finished, I think I deserved tea, warm scones and a piece of ginger cake, and I did wash up!  The rest of the day we spent sitting outside until it became cooler, I did do some work on my photographs this evening, I hope to up-load some to the website, however I am concerned about the speed of the connection, it is taking long enough even for a simple email.

Friday 1st May 2009

Another stunning walk today along the coastal walking path to Boscastle, once again so many beautiful wild flowers, we certainly chose the best time to come down to the South of  England.  What a lot of work has gone into revitalising Boscastle since the 2004 flood, even a old building has been restored with the original roof “unevenness” that was part of the building’s character.  The weather unfortunately changed while we were there, the complete opposite to yesterday, it started sunny and dry and then became wet, luckily we had shelter as we waited for the bus back and again the driver made a un-scheduled stop at the end of the lane to the campsite to drop us off.

Saturday 2nd May 2009

We needed milk and a “Sun” newspaper (to get the free TV magazine).we could have just walked up to the reception at the camp site, however it was a lovely morning so we elected to once again take the coastal walk into Tintagel, this time walking further along the path as far as the ruins of Tintagel Castle, the birthplace (allegedly) of King Arthur, must have been draughty in his cot as the place didn’t have a roof! Unluckily, we seemed to have got involved in a stampede of French students coming in the opposite direction, a swift detour was needed to avoid being trampled, could have been worse, they could have been Japanese.  We had lunch sitting outside the famous “Old Post Office”, they still had an original post box , so I decided to post 2 letters there, don’t know if they will ever arrive the next collection was something A.D.  I couldn’t read it, it was in roman numerals, I should perhaps have posted them at the “Spar” shop a further 50 yards up the road!  Again, great service from the bus driver, dropping us off at the top of the lane, however this time the bus was quite full, by the time other passengers had disembarked as well there was only 2 passengers left on the bus, all the rest were staying at the campsite.  One would like to think of the extra revenue earned by the bus company from the people from the camp site, but everybody, without exception had a free pass.

Sunday 3rd May 2009

A relaxing day, although there was a cool wind it was sunny, so we sat outside for most of the time reading and listening to music, I studied my Adobe Photography manual, it’s the advanced manual, maybe I should have bought the beginners.  Rang my brother to congratulate his football team Birmingham City in gaining promotion to the Premiership, at least it’s 6 guaranteed points for Aston Villa next season!

Monday 4th May 2009

A windy and wet day, (typical bank holiday) so we did exactly the same as yesterday, read, listened to music and I worked on some of my photographs on Adobe.

Tuesday 5th May 2009

Padstow Touring Park, 50 31 65 N, 4 56 90 W (26 mile).  I think everybody was leaving at the same time this morning, there were 4 motorhomes queuing at the motorhome service point to empty their grey waste and top up with water, we were obviously not in a hurry so we allowed someone to go in front of us who were only on holiday for a week.  Our first stop (as usual) was at Tesco, having downloaded the Tesco Supermarkets POI (points of interest) to “Betty” (for newbies, Betty is our SatNav), the one at Wadebridge was nicely situated just off the main A39 and we didn’t need to go into Wadebridge town centre, the car park also had plenty of room.  The intention was to stay for a few days at Trewince Holiday Park, between Wadebridge and Padstow, a place we had camped at with the children, many years ago, but when we arrived there the reception was closed, the shop was empty (as in, nothing in it) and the only people about were workmen repairing the road, we walked around; the amenities block was shut and the swimming pool was  empty (as in, no H20), most peculiar, supposedly it was re-opening Easter (2010???).  We drove further towards Padstow and found a nice little camp site, “ Padstow Touring Park” and will stay here for a few days, hopefully the weather will improve, as we would like to cycle along the “Camel Trail”.

Wednesday 6th May 2009

After a morning cleaning the outside of the motorhome, or rather giving it a wipe down the weather improved enough for us to walk down to Padstow.  The manager at the campsite gave us a really good map to follow over the fields and surprisingly it only took us about 30 minutes before we were in the centre of the old fishing port of Padstow.  With a restaurant, bistro, delicatessens  and a fish and chip shop all owned by the celebrated TV chef Rick Stein, I don’t know why they don’t just re-name it Stein.  We did look at the menu at “The Seafood Restaurant”, but will need to wait until 6 numbers come up on the Lotto and that was just for the starter!  We walked around the quaint old town and shops and had a look around the small harbour, before walking back to the campsite, tomorrow hopefully we will use our bicycles and cycle the old Camel Trail.

Thursday 7th May 2009

With an improvement in the weather we rode our bikes first of all down into Padstow to Boots Chemist, we have had a letter from them, evidently there is a “re-call” on Dentyl mouth wash which we use and purchased from them (the information picked up from Boots Advantage Card membership), we had already used most of it, without any apparent ill effects, although I had wondered about my skin turning green.  Anyway they hadn’t received a new batch of the one we use (minty) so they gave us the money back, will have to make do with a malt whisky gargle for a bit longer, I hope!  We did eventually find ourselves on the Camel Trail and enjoyed a pleasant ride along the Camel Estuary to Wadebridge a distance of about 5 miles,  we were surprised how busy it was but we dutifully kept to the left as those on hire bikes hurtled passed us, we did meet one pair that were riding on the wrong side of the track, obviously French.  We noted that when we were previously in Wadebridge there was only one cycle hire shop, now there are at least six.  It was a bit different on our return, the wind against us and it started to rain. plus, from Padstow to the campsite it was mostly uphill.  At least there was not a “leg and a wheel” incident, without going into too much of an explanation, many years ago we were riding along the trail with Rhiain and Michael, they started to argue (as small children do) and I looked around to see what they were doing and rode down the embankment, all Jenny, Rhiain and Michael could see when they got to me at the bottom was a leg and a bicycle wheel, luckily I didn’t hurt myself and it certainly stopped the argument as they couldn’t stop laughing, still remembered as the “leg and a wheel” they have never let me forget it!

Friday 8th May 2009

A very windy night, which kept me awake for some time and then we slept in this morning.  We have decided to stay until Monday, so whilst I prepared our usual fresh fruit breakfast, Jenny went to pay for the extra days.  We couldn’t stay on the same pitch as it was pre-booked for another visitor, so after breakfast we moved to another one a bit further along the camping field, better really, as we have a more scenic view and it is nearer to the “new” amenities block, it didn’t take us long as we didn’t need to store everything away for a short move.  We decided not to go far today, just walked across the fields to the Tesco store that we can actually see from were we are, for some reason it has a tall revolving pillar in the car park, which can probably be seen from space, for what purpose I can’t imagine.

Saturday 9th May 2009

A quite day, a walk across the fields to the Tesco supermarket to get the newspapers and then a brisk walk back in time to watch the F1 Grand Prix practice from Barcelona.  We were delighted to see Jenson Button achieve pole position, the rest of the afternoon we read the papers and relaxed, unfortunately because of the cold wind we had to sit indoors.

Sunday 10th May 2009

A similar day to yesterday, although we did spend some time cleaning the motorhome inside before watching the Grand Prix.  We did manage to sit outside to read in the afternoon, but the wind was very chilly so once again we spent most of the time in the motorhome.  We are considering buying a wind break, however what we don’t want is the multi-coloured type reserved for Blackpool beach.

Monday 11th May 2009

Tregurrian Camping and Caravanning Club Site, Nr Newquay, 50 26 96 N, 5 01 89 W, (46 Mile).  The Tesco Supermarket was the first stop, however there were 2 “stewards” at the entrance lane explaining that their till computers had “crashed” (evidently nationwide, probably a virus introduced by Morrison’s or Sainsbury’s, joke) however the self-service tills were operational but there would be a ½ hour wait, rather than turn around like the majority of customers we decided to still shop, the big plus was that the car park was almost empty.  After collecting our shopping we waited in the short queue for the self-service tills, with assistants to help us we were soon through, the assistant helping even suggesting that Jenny could get a job there, I immediately asked for an application form for her!  After leaving the camp site at 11:00 am and driving the 6 mile to Tesco we still left the superstore at 11:40 am so I think we were actually quicker.  Although we have done 46 mile today we are actually only about 12 mile from Padstow, in fact the Wind farm we could see on a hill in the South we can still see now in the North, the reason?  We drove to St Austell first to call at a B&Q and a Halford’s for a few bits and pieces (oil, cycle puncture outfit, etc). we spent longer crawling through the town centre road works than the driving across, we wished we hadn’t bothered, still we were still at the camp site just after 2:30 pm.  Amazing sunset tonight, sadly I missed the best part as we were eating our tea, so I didn’t manage to take any photographs.

Tuesday 12th May 2009

Another camp site which is on a bus route, I may have to eat my words about the UK transport system as the 556 to Newquay stops almost outside the camp site and runs every hour, we got on the 12:30 pm bus and were in Newquay 20 minutes later and again we were able to use our free passes.  Newquay hasn’t changed much since our last visit, one street full of souvenir shops selling T shirts and “kiss me quick” hats, the one type of shop I required was an ironmongers and we couldn’t find one!  We sat overlooking the town beach for our lunch before finding a café for a cup of coffee, before locating the bus stop for our journey back.  The bus arrived, a double decker ????  Why?  It was empty, very worrying how was a double decker going to negotiate the narrow lanes, especially with a lady driver?  Typical, we got out of the town and she went the wrong way.  Well actually she didn’t she just went another way to call at the local school, the seats weren’t empty for long, hence a large double decker and we soon safely alighted at the lane to the camp site, phew!

Wednesday 13th May 2009

We have found 3 camping and caravan stores within a short distance of Newquay so we drove first to Redruth then to Truro and lastly to St Austell a round drive of 58 mile.  We needed some tent pegs to prevent the outside mats being blown away, a windbreak and some waste tank fluid, we also wanted to look at “hold down” solutions for the awning, anybody got the idea its windy down in Cornwall?  What a contrast in the weather from the West coast of Cornwall (where we staying) to the East, when we  left it was cloudy, we then drove into miserable misty, wet weather on the east, we then drove back  to a pleasant sunny afternoon at Newquay.  Had a really nice email from a lady in Colorado, USA, who has visited our website, she is going to New Zealand and is using our travelogue for ideas when she and her husband visit there in November, great when some of the work we have put into the web site as been useful.

Thursday 14th May 2009

Again we are stopping some extra days, really because the weather has not been brilliant and we haven’t yet been on any walks along this beautiful coastline, hopefully in the next few days it will improve. I did manage to start wax polishing the motorhome before the rain once again sent us indoors.

Friday 15th May 2009

High winds and heavy rain during the night (the weather forecaster’s were right)  and today isn’t much better.  Sitting in the warmth of the motorhome will be the “order of the day” I will attempt to update the web site, organise my photographs and Jenny as (at last) managed to start (or actually finish) some embroidery she started a couple of years ago (well we have been busy).  We are in a pleasant location here, with a good view so we are more than happy to stay and relax, in sight of the flagpole, on which this week the Camping and Caravanning Club pennant has blown vigorously to all points of the compass!

Saturday 16th May 2009 - Sunday17th May 2009

Two quiet relaxing days, reading, listening to music and generally not doing a great deal as the weather is so poor, still wet and very windy.

Monday 18th May 2009

We were going to move down the coast today, however our daughter Rhiain rang yesterday and said she would like to come and stay for a couple of days, so rather than move further away from Weston-Super-Mare we have decided to stay at Newquay.  We did find a Morrison’s in Newquay so we replenished our larder there.  I then spent the rest of the day, despite the wind, waxing the upper part of the motorhome, didn’t go up on the roof though, might have got blown off!

Tuesday 19th May 2009

Relaxed day before Rhiain arrived, her flight to Majorca today returning on time, so she had time to drive down late afternoon.  We then spent the evening perusing travel books of Canada to help her organise her holiday to Alberta with Kevin in June, poor Kevin has got delayed in Bordeaux, France having to deliver a lorry load of theatre stage props there and with the French bank holiday, plus the ban on driving HGV’s on Sunday’s he will not be back until early next week.

Wednesday 20th May 2009

Spent most of the day on the Internet helping Rhiain organise car hire, hotels etc, for their Canada holiday.  Quite funny, we would find a place to stay, Rhiain would then text Kevin give him the appropriate details then we would go back on line to book it.  Hope he approves of my choice’s!

Thursday 21st May 2009

After finalising some of Rhiain and Kevin’s holiday itinerary we spent the rest of the day chatting, Rhiain drove Jenny to Morrison’s for a “top up” of grocery’s, (saved moving the motorhome). We did not realise that we were coming up to a bank holiday weekend so rather than move tomorrow when the roads will be busy we have decided (again) to stay over the weekend.

Friday 22nd May 2009

Wow, the weather has improved, it is dry and the wind has dropped significantly.  We decided to visit Truro today, we caught the bus into Newquay and by a brilliant piece of planning, (or was it luck?) we only waited five minutes (just time to pop to the loo) before catching the “quick” bus (according to the lady in the bus information office) to Truro.

30 minutes later we were 5 mile from Newquay and we could still see the town from the top of a hill!  I must say I admired the ability of the driver, negotiating the narrow Cornish lanes in a double-decker bus to the various villages before we finally arrived at Truro.  We spent a splendid few hours looking around the city before catching the bus back to Newquay, a much quicker one, it only taking 45 minutes, (a female driver, definitely more scratches on the bus from tree branches on the return).  Great planning (really) on the return alighting before the bus station in Newquay, walking across the road to the bus stop to catch a bus going in the opposite direction which went to Tregurrian, if we had gone all the way to the bus station we would have missed it.

Saturday 23rd May 2009 – Sunday 24th May 2009

Two lazy days, at last the weather has improved and we were able to sit outside and read, even if we did have to sit behind the windbreak.  Also the wind has dropped sufficiently for me to go on the roof of the motorhome and finish wax polishing, the only part I could not reach being the part “over the cab” so a cloth on the end of a brush was required to do the job, at least now the whole of the motorhome has a protective wax coat on it, even though it has taken me over a week, having to tackle it in between the wind and rain showers.  Of course both days I have had to watch the F1 Grand Prix practice and race from Monaco, another great performance from Brawn GP, Jenson and Rubens.

Monday 25th May 2009

Back to another wet and windy day, guess what?  We stayed in the motorhome, reading, listened to music and I sorted out my music file on the laptop.

Tuesday 26th May 2009

Trevedra Farm Caravan Club Site, Sennen, Nr Penzance, 50 05 34 N, 5 40 70 W, (57 Mile).  Well that’s it can’t go any further without falling off the UK mainland.  A quick dash around Morrison’s and then a short drive to Homebase at Truro for another storage box, (having decided a laundry bag for the washing wasn’t working, although it was part of my inheritance from my mother, thanks mum).  After lunch in a lay-by with lorries rocking the motorhome, how we miss those wonderful rest-areas in Australia and New Zealand, well off the road, plenty of room and clean toilets.  I’ll digress at this point, watched Ray Mears (the survival guy) on Sunday up the top end of Queensland, then Jenny watched Heartbeat (I don’t) and part of it was on location in Australia, THEN, I had an email from Pat and Keith in Wagga Wagga, our friends from the Cape York safari, they are still in drought conditions in New South Wales, it made us both distinctly “away sick”.  Anyway back to the “Duchy”, we arrived at the campsite mid-afternoon a very nice camp site which is on a working farm, I know that because I had to walk behind a herd of cows as they ambled along to the milking shed, luckily they didn’t deposit anything on the road, I nearly did I was trying to get to the loo!

Wednesday 27th May 2009

Will only give you one guess what we did today, the weather during the night was very wet and windy, although both the rain and wind are now (mid-afternoon) easing.  However I can’t tell you what it is doing at present, the mist has come down and we can’t see more than 50 yards! Answer to the question?  Reading the paper, doing the crossword, solving the Sudoku, listening to music, typing up (early) today’s travelogue and tonight I have the football to look forward to.

Thursday 28th May 2009

Treen Farm Campsite, 50 02 93 N, 05 38 68 W, (6 mile).  Just a very short drive this morning to Treen, a campsite recommended in a Motorhome magazine, however we weren’t sure whether we would be able to reach it as the article started off . “First the bad news-access to this end-of the-world site is very difficult for large motorhomes”, we therefore parked in the car park in the village and walked the 300 metres to the small reception office, (actually just a shed), the very nice lady owner told us that the “refuse truck” manages the track, however her father walked down to the car park with us to have a look at our motorhome, whilst we were walking back a delivery truck came up, plus a herd of Guernsey Cows, we concluded that we would manage the narrow track and with mirrors retracted we arrived at the camp site.  No mains power on this site, so we will be relying on the leisure battery and the solar panel, the first time we have “tested” it.  We had a wonderful walk along the cliffs this afternoon, the views were everything the article said “a truly fabulous vision of sand, sea, rock and sky.

Friday 29th May 2009

We decided to have a look at Penzance this morning so we walked through the tiny village of Treen to the “main” road to catch the bus, however, last night I had been talking (as opposed to Jenny “gassing”) to the man  in the motorhome on the next pitch, whilst we were waiting at the bus stop he stopped at the end of the lane and offered us a lift into Penzance, we were thus in Penzance in a lot shorter time then we had anticipated, we had time while we were there for Jenny to have her hair cut.  After a walk around the town through some of the narrow quaint streets and strolling along the harbour, we even made a purchase, at last we have found a “square bucket”, one would think that this would have been easy, we have been looking for one for weeks!  Why a square one? Everything fits so much easier in the garage (large rear locker), if they are square!  We had lunch at a coffee shop before catching the bus back to Treen, enjoying sitting on the top-deck of the “topless” bus!

Saturday 30th May 2009

At last the weather has been warm enough to actually sit outside the motorhome so we did exactly that, reading the daily papers.  After lunch we walked along the narrow track from the camp site, joined the coastal path and viewed the magnificent Pednvounder Beach, before continuing along the path to the lookout above Porthcurno Beach and the famous open-air Minack theatre on the cliff top opposite.

Sunday 31st May 2009

After viewing the stunning Pednvounder Beach yesterday we decided today to attempt the steep clamber down to the beach.  It was a bit difficult, very steep and slippery, especially for Jenny.  We weren’t disappointed and stayed there for most of the day, we even went in the sea, however with the sea temperature at 12 degrees C, we didn’t allow the freezing water above our knees!

Monday 1st June 2009

Again a pleasant walk along the coastal path, the opposite direction to that of Saturday, more stunning views, wonderful wild flowers and hot sun.  We had lunch at a landmark called “Logan Rock” an old (very old) site of a castle, not that we could make out any detail of it, in fact we didn’t know until we looked at a information board in Treen village that a castle even existed, we just thought it was a rock formation.  We did have a long talk whilst having lunch with a visitor from Holland, who was on holiday in Cornwall, before walking back to the campsite, where we spent the rest of the afternoon sitting outside the motorhome reading.

Tuesday 2nd June 2009

The sun was shining so Porthcurno Beach was our destination today, so again we had a very pleasant walk along the coast path, despite the steep descent down to the beach, it was much easier than Sunday’s “clamber” down to Pednvounder Beach.  We spent the time relaxing (we do a lot of that), Jenny reading, whilst I listened to my ipod.  We have very good memories of this beach, having spent Christmas in a holiday cottage in St Ives with the children many years ago.  We always remember walking along this beach Christmas morning with Rhiain and Michael insisting on having a paddle in the sea , the weather was “warm(ish)” and there was not a cloud in the sky, we have had colder weather in the last month!  No Basking Sharks in the bay whilst we were there, although a school/pack/herd as been spotted near Sennen Cove this week.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BROTHER BRIAN

Wednesday 3rd June 2009

Veryan Caravan and Camping Club Site, 50 14 10 N, 4 53 95 W, (51 mile).  Must thank the man we were talking to last night whose son & daughter were camping next to us, he recognised a band playing on our radio and commented on who it was, when I came back from washing up I thought what terrific music it was.  When I saw him this morning I enquired further about the group (who I had never heard of) he then very kindly gave me a CD of their music he had copied.  Listen to “Derek Trucks Band” you won’t be disappointed.  We packed everything up last night (chairs, table, windbreaks, etc), so after topping up the fresh water tank we were soon on our way. 3 stops on the way this morning, Tesco for shopping and for the first time we needed to refill the gas bottles.  We decided to buy the “ Gaslow” system when we purchased the motorhome, which meant instead of exchanging gas bottles we refill at a  service station the same as filling a vehicle with LPG.  The initial purchase of the system is more expensive but over a long period will pay dividends, no carrying heavy gas bottles and much cheaper for filling, it cost us £12.66 for 23 litres, not bad considering we have used it since March 17th for cooking (every day), heating (3 days) and the fridge (5 days) and no more difficult than filling with diesel.  As we have not been on a “power site” for the last few days, relying on the leisure battery and charging through the solar panel, the only thing we have not been able to do is re-charge our 240 volts items, (toothbrush, mobile phones, vacuum cleaner, shaver, laptop, etc) so we stopped at the camping store in Truro to purchase an inverter (12volt DC  to 230volt AC converter), after a quick phone call to my brother Brian (sparkman) for advice who then baffles me with maths and starts talking watts, voltage, amps and other complicated electrical equations, we did agree that a 180 watt Inverter would suffice so we bought one of those.

Thursday 4th June 2009

Smelt gas in the motorhome last night so we needed to investigate it this morning, armed with a mug of water and washing up liquid I “painted” all the connections in the gas locker with the solution. I found a slight leak in the connection that comes from the filler, a call to Rob at Gaslow to explain the concern and he soon came up with the solution,  nothing to worry about and if we call at the factory when up in the Midlands they will fix it, good service!  A very cold wind today, despite it being sunny so we stayed in the motorhome and . . . . . yes, you’ve guessed it, relaxed.

Friday 5th June 2009

Bodmin Caravan and Camping Club Site, 50 28 59 N, 4 42 41 W, (31 miles).  Undecided this morning whether to stay for a few extra days or continue our travels, finally deciding to drive to Bodmin.  We will definitely visit this camp site again, especially after having a walk this morning to the fishing pool on the camp site, we had a bit of difficulty as we walked around the pool, there was an “eruption” of tiny frogs on the path and had to tread very carefully to avoid them.  Having spent £26 on a fishing licence, I must organise my fishing tackle and bait then  Jenny will have to drag me away from these camp sites with fishing pools.  We are at a very pleasant camp site, electing to choose a site without power, another experiment using the leisure battery, solar panel and our purchase of yesterday, the Inverter, we do need to know we can be fully reliant on the 12 volt system, without resorting to the use of 240 volt, plus it saves us £3.20 per night for the use of the power!  Hopefully, this weekend, (weather permitting) we will use the bicycles and ride the Camel Trail, (the opposite end from Padstow), although the F1 grand Prix from Turkey may interrupt our plans. Might even search for the famous “Beast of Bodmin”, oh, correction, its already sitting next to me!

Saturday 6th June 2009

A 15 minute stroll around to ASDA this morning for the Saturday papers, if I could have vaulted over the 8 foot edge I would have been there in 2 minutes, we are at the back of the store.  Spent the day reading the papers and watching the grand prix practice, another day relaxing in paradise!

Sunday 7th June 2009

Well done Jenson Button, unless something really untoward happens it looks like for the second year running we will have a British F1 champion at least we seem to be good at something!  After the Grand Prix we decided to use our bikes and ride the “Camel Trail”, we did delay starting off as there was a massive black cloud hovering above the camp site.  A steep downhill ride to the start of the trail in Bodmin but once we were on the trail the going was mostly flat.  We rode all the way into Wadebridge, thus completing the trail from the opposite direction we rode from in May from Padstow and after a stop for a drink and snack we rode back.  A very pleasant 14 mile bike ride, well not quite. . . . .  we walked the last 2 mile from Bodmin up the long hill to the camp site, to say the least we were exhausted and rather sweaty when we arrived back, we had decided to wear our anoraks because it looked as if was going to rain, wrong decision!

Monday 8th June 2009

Weston-Super-Mare Caravan and Camping Club Site, 51 20 08 N, 2 55 84 W (126 Mile).  Well it looks like our first grand-son is going to be arriving earlier than planned so we have made our way up to a camp site near our daughters, before driving up to Lichfield in the next couple of days to be with our son Michael and his fiancée Sharon to await the happy event.  The intention was to have a few more days near Dartmoor before returning  to the Midland’s  late June, however nature provail’s!

Tuesday 9th June 2009

Rhiain called in at the camp site to collect us on her way back from the airport after her flight back from Corfu, we  dare not  go down to the house and collect our Fiesta in case she thought it had been stolen!  Jenny “commandeered” the washing machine and did some washing and we had a quick “catch up” with Rhiain before she was off again on another flight, no wonder airlines don’t make any money, the whole Thomas Cook crew flying “Easy Jet” to Belfast, overnight in a hotel in Belfast before an afternoon flight to Monastir (Algeria), before returning to Bristol!

Wednesday 10th June 2009

Kingsbury Water Park Camping & Caravan Club Site,  A phone call at 7:30 am this morning from Michael. WE ARE GRANDPARENTS, Congratulations to Sharon and Michael on the birth of their son Charlie at 6:03 am weighing 5lb 1oz, we are absolutely delighted.  We left for the Midlands at 10am, Jenny driving the Fiesta so we can use it for the next couple of weeks to drive around in.  I meanwhile obviously drove the motorhome, great I could have the radio on as loud as I wanted! We were going to go to the Cannock Chase Caravan Site, as it is a bit nearer Lichfield, however despite that we decided to stay at Kingsbury as it is so comfortable.

Thursday 11th June 2009

A great day drove over to Burton Hospital with Michael to see our new Grandson, we stayed for a time before leaving Michael with Sharon & Charlie, we in the meantime walked 100 yards up the road from the hospital to visit Rhiain’s friend Lizzie and 3 year old daughter Tori, not forgetting their wonderful Border Collie Fluck, both Tori and Fluck competing for my attention, Tori won, Fluck sulked!  After another quick visit to Sharon & Charlie, we drove Michael back to Lichfield before continuing back to Kingsbury Water Park.

Friday 12th June 2009

My brother Brian and his wife Linda came over to the Camp site for a visit, we then drove the short distance to the Dog & Doublet for lunch, very nice too.  Brian told us the tale of his cycle ride around Kingsbury water Park a few weeks ago.  He has bought the same type of folding bike as Jenny and I and was not impressed with the performance as he road around the pools, performance improved however, when he discovered he had inadvertently twisted the brake cable around the handlebar stem, he had ridden around with the brake on,  good job one of us is sensible!

Saturday 13th June 2009

A stop this morning at the storage unit in Tamworth, dropping off some of our winter clothes (hope we aren’t to premature, it’s only June) and collecting some more summer clothes, as well as a few more bits and pieces.  We then drove to Lichfield to do some shopping, with the intention then of going over to Burton Hospital to see Sharon and Charlie at visiting time, however, good news, they are both coming home today, so we have decided instead to see them on Monday, giving mother and baby chance to rest at home over the weekend.

Sunday 14th June 2009

Missed reading the newspapers we bought yesterday so we spent the morning reading and relaxing.  Jenny decided to do some washing in the afternoon, I jumped on my bike and rode over to the Kingsbury Water Park pool where power boats were racing and watched them, not that brilliant, it appeared that once one was in the lead it was a bit processional and there were only the maximum of 4 boats in the racing that I watched.

Monday 15th June 2009

A busy day today, first to Lichfield to see Michael, Sharon & Charlie, they are at present staying with Sharon’s parents as Sharon is still a bit sore.  We then drove Michael over to Mothercare at Tamworth to collect the pram we have bought for them, they have improved since I had one, mine was a box with a wheel at each corner, this one seems to have everything except traction control and anti-lock braking (I bet you can even order those as an optional extra). Kev’ (Rhiain’s boyfriend) rang to say they were at the camp site (funny 1½ hours Kev’, but then Rhiain was driving) we therefore drove from Tamworth to Kingsbury to see them, also for Michael to meet Kev’ for the first time.  We all then went back to Lichfield for Charlie to meet his “Auntie Rhiain”, Jenny and I stopped a short time before leaving to arrange food for a barbeque for Rhiain and Kev’ back at the motorhome,  A very successful “barbie” with myself cooking the meat aided and hindered by Kev’, shame the potatoes weren’t quite ready, but Jenny was in charge of them!  Rhiain and Kev’ stayed until almost mid-night, before driving down to Gatwick for their early morning flight to Edmonton, Canada.

Tuesday 16th June 2009

We have decided to stay until next Wednesday (at least) so Jenny went to pay for the extra days, surprisingly, they are fully booked on power sites this next weekend so we will move to a non-power site for one night.  For future reference we visited another 2 campsites this morning the first at Lea Marston and the second at a CS site (Caravan and Camping Certified Site at Shawbury, owned previously by Graham Fisher a good customer of mine when I was in the motor trade and now run by his son David. Graham having moved to Ireland after the death of his wife Annabel who was such a nice lady.  David gave me Graham’s telephone number, I know he will be pleased to hear from me.  Next stop Jackson’s of Old Arley a camping store which we have been customers of over many years.  We bought 2 reclining seats so in future when we have visitors they (or rather me) will not have to sit on the floor when we are outside of the motorhome.  We also met 2 of our old neighbours from Masefield Close, Joan and Terry who we had a nice chat with, before deciding to have lunch there (bangers, peas and mash in a Yorkshire pudding).  Jenny asked as we departed “I wonder how Steve is?” Steve again was a very good customer of mine and Jenny worked for him when she  ran her own  accounting company.  We therefore drove the short distance to his business premises and spent a very pleasant hour with him , catching up with all our and his news, said Jenny looked younger than ever, didn’t mention me!  On arriving back we decided to put the motorhome awning out and experimented  with the position of the windbreaks to surround it, (we have already decided not to buy the additional parts to the awning to effectively make an outside room), we will buy another 7 pole windbreak to surround the awning to make a nice (private) outside seating area for dining” el-fresco”, especially as we have now brought the camp kitchen and cooker etc from the storage unit (saves me cooking indoors)!

Wednesday 17th June 2009

Appointments with the optician this morning, didn’t we do well?  Both our prescriptions not changing significantly over the last 2 years to need a change in spectacles, (good job as Jenny’s are normally about £600).  We then drifted into one of our old habits and went to Café Nero for a coffee and muffin (after the good news at the Optician’s, we can now afford it). Jo, the girl behind the counter said “Hello Grandad”, it took me a bit of time to realise she was addressing me, (she is a friend of Sharon’s), I felt immensely proud!  We then went back to the motorhome and relaxed for the rest of the day, reading, listening to music and sorting my photographs, still!

Thursday 18th June 2009

No breakfast at the campsite as Jenny had to go for a “fasting" blood test, good husband that I am, I therefore forsook mine as well, I couldn’t have eaten my fruit salad whilst Jenny watched me with dribble coming out of her mouth anyway.  Made up for it afterwards though, went to the “Causeway Café” and had a “full English”, the first time we have eaten a cooked breakfast for many months.  We then drove to Brian's, my brother, once there we were able to update (at last) the website and Jenny also checked the on-line banking, as we had a strong signal directly from cable broadband.  Brian had also made us a pair of extra ramps for the motorhome, (for those extra sloping camp sites), as at times we felt we needed a couple more inches to get the motorhome level.  After spending the morning with him and enviously inspecting the model submarine which he had bought, we did our grocery shop at Tesco, before visiting the local fishing tackle shop for a landing net pole (I optimistically think I may need one)!

Friday 19th June 2009

A casual morning before a drive into Lichfield to once again visit the opticians for one of Jenny’s further eye tests,  Than a walk up to our dentist to see Heidi to obtain some more “Interdental” brushes, which we have managed to purchase much cheaper by buying a larger quantity, it is important whilst we are in the Midlands to get all these little “jobs” done so visits to Opticians, Dentist and Doctor’s have all been organised in the last few days.  Michael then rang to ask us to take Charlie over to Burton Hospital with himself and Sharon, the midwife was concerned that he hadn’t done a “poo” for 3 days, however the consultant at the hospital was happy with him, explaining it was perfectly normal, I think I had the same problem when I was born, although my memory is a bit vague on the subject!  Whist Sharon, Michael and Charlie were at the hospital, we took the opportunity to visit Mullarkeys the large fishing tackle shop in Burton, trouble was we had difficulty remembering exactly were they were located, it being many years (over 10) since we had been there, we surprised ourselves by almost driving straight to it, (we knew it was close to the hospital).  Well at least the large sign over the windows said “Mullarkeys Fishing Tackle”, we walked into an Indian dress and material shop!  The lady in the shop told us where they had moved to, a warehouse from which they now do mail order, a further 2 miles nearer the town centre, I purchased a new leger/feeder rod for a decent price.  We returned to the hospital to collect Dad, Mum and Baby and drove back to Lichfield, we have organised for Michael Sharon and Charlie to come for a barbeque on Monday, lets hope the weather remains dry and warm.

Saturday 20th June 2009

I was really energetic this morning, rode through the water park to the newsagent’s in Kingsbury, having to dodge Rabbits and a flock of Canadian Geese with young Goslings on the way, plus the occasional pedestrian. Jenny had prepared breakfast while I was away so afterwards we had a relaxed morning reading the daily papers.  We did experiment again with the awning and with the additional windbreak we have bought made the outside area of the motorhome really cosy.  British Grand Prix tomorrow so concentrated lunch time on watching the practice, Rhiain must have been watching it in Canada as I had a text message from her, (they are 7 hours behind BST) so I guess that she was probably watching it whilst lying in bed, she also mentioned that she and Kev’ have seen 2 Black Bears on the drive to Jasper National Park, lucky so in so’s!

Sunday 21st June 2009

A quiet day, concentrated on watching the British Grand Prix from Silverstone, not exactly a thrilling race, but at least Ruben’s came third.

Monday 22nd June 2009

In Lichfield for Jenny’s 10am doctors appointment, I meanwhile purchased a newspaper and sat in Café Nero with a large Latte and talked to Jo’ who works there and is a friend of Sharon’s. Jenny wasn’t long and after a cup of tea we did some shopping.  Who should we “bump” into but Michael and we arranged the time to bring the “new” family over to the caravan park for the afternoon and organise a barbeque, as it happened we met him outside “Walter Smith” the Butchers so we purchased a variety of  BBQ meats from there.  We had already bought a disposable BBQ from Tesco so we used that, wish I’d bought the same one as last week from Asda, the Tesco one was cxxx.  We had a fantastic afternoon having a very pleasant walk around the Kingsbury Pools, I thought I would have forgotten how to push a pram, but like riding a bike you never forget. I had an extra piece of steak for tea, for some reason Charlie didn’t seem to want it!

Tuesday 23rd June 2009

A visit to my brother Brian’s house this morning, an ulterior motive, I was on the scrounge. I needed some bright paint to put on the rod tip of my new fishing rod, 2 cup hooks, a spanner to tighten up the TV bracket for the motor home  and a piece of brass to make a non-magnetic screwdriver (to adjust the car compass), sure enough Brian was able to help me, he doesn’t’ make a bad cup of tea either!  Then a trip to Tesco to “top up” the grocery’s taking advantage of the “money off” vouchers that the newspapers are giving away at present.  After our disappointment last night we have decided to buy a gas BBQ (we can use it with the spare gas bottle we have from camping), we therefore visited the garden centre on the way back, not seeing what we wanted we then called in at Homebase, still not seeing what we (thought) wanted.

Wednesday 24th June 2009

After surfing the net last night we found that “Go Outdoors” had the sort of gas BBQ we required, but on the way decided to call in at another garden centre and seen a “Weber” charcoal one we particularly liked (bear in mind we were buying a gas one).  We then called in at “Jackson’s” and saw the same gas type one we had looked at last night on the  “Go Outdoors” website and didn’t like it!  We were now in a quandary, a charcoal one we did like or a gas one we didn’t like.  Decision made, when we got to “Go Outdoors”, they had both types in stock and the Weber charcoal was £5 cheaper, no contest we purchased the charcoal one, it does mean we will have to take charcoal with us, but at least our son Michael will be pleased as he thought that a gas one was “cheating”!  We then drove over to the other side of Coventry, we have decided to have the underneath of the motorhome “under sealed” and having seen an advertisement in the Motorhome magazine for the Before“n”After company we went to arrange it.  We “had” booked it in for Monday but after we left the premises, we looked at the information pack he had given us, what didn’t impress us was the mention of “cleaning any surplus off upholstery” that filled us with confidence no end, the place was like a “rubbish tip” and the office was no better, plus the fact that he wanted us to pay cash (nuf’ said).  We have decided therefore to ring up tomorrow and cancel, especially as we have now found out that “West Country Motorhomes” can do it for us and cheaper!

Thursday 25th June 2009

First job this morning was to ring Before“n”After and cancel our Monday appointment, he did ask the reason and I told him the truth.  Rhiain and Kev’ arrived lunchtime after their flight back from Canada yesterday and obviously they had a great deal to talk about, it sounds a wonderful place and hopefully Jenny and I will be able to visit it sometime in the future. I had the opportunity to try out the new BBQ and after an initial problem with lighting the charcoal (not usual for me) we enjoyed a great meal, Morrison’s kebabs being particularly tasty and we finished up with strawberries and cream, (Kev’ had pears, he doesn’t like strawberries, funny guy)!  Kev and Rhiain came up in there own vehicles as Kev’ needed to return to Worthing, Rhiain was stopping overnight with us so she could visit Michael, Sharon and Charlie tomorrow.

Friday 26th June 2009

I was left on my own today (peace, perfect peace) as Jenny went over to Lichfield with Rhiain to visit Michael and family. Rhiain and Kev’ had bought Charlie a limited edition bear from the “Build a Bear” workshop, “Rockie” came with his own birth certificate and passport (duly stamped) and is already employed as a “Mountie”, Michael was teasing Charlie by putting the mountie hat on is head, he his still so small it fitted!  Rhiain and Kev’  had also bought him a babygro with “Bean” on it, Rhiain’s nickname for Charlie.  Gosh, after a nice dry spell it is really wet at present, Rhiain left for Weston-Super-Mare during a lull in the rain, looking on the internet it is much dryer in the South. the rain here was still pounding on the roof of the motorhome when we went to bed.

Saturday 27th June 2009

What has now become a Saturday ritual, I again rode down to the newsagents in Kingsbury on my bike for the daily papers, bit different this morning, last week I was avoiding rabbits and geese, this week it was fish!  YES FISH, the lane through the water park (now I know why they call it that) was flooded for about 300 yards and I was just managing to cycle through it, with the pedals completely underwater, it was a good job I was cycling in shorts and with just my sandals on.  In several places I could see fish swimming and at one point a fish about 4inch long swam in front of me, in several other places the water was several inches deep as I cycled along, it was a good job I knew where the lane was  as I could have ended up in deep water, literally!  Jenny had prepared breakfast by the time I swam rode back, I did go over to the amenities block to wash my legs and feet, one doesn’t know what may have been in the water and we relaxed the rest of the day reading and listening to the radio.  I did switch the television on to watch the news and catch the weather, however as I “channel hopped” I noticed that my favourite film of all time was just starting “Crocodile Dundee” and despite seeing it numerous times I still watched it through to the end, it made me distinctly “away sick”, I would love to be in the vast open space of the Northern Territory outback once again.

Sunday 28th June 2009

A very lazy day, did nowt!

Monday 29th June 2009

An opportunity today to visit my old work colleagues at CST Pharma so we drove over to Aldridge to see them, thank you to Daniel, Sue, Laura, Kaska (plus baby in tummy ) and Lincoln for making us so welcome it was good to see you all again and also to chat to Keith and Gary. We then intended calling at my brothers house at Great Barr, however he was at our niece’s Joy so we diverted over to Streetly instead and had a cup of tea there, she made a better cup of tea than Brian anyway. Then a trip to Tesco for a “stock up” as we are having Brian, Linda, Sharon, Michael and Charlie over to the campsite for a barbeque

Tuesday 30th June 2009

We thought the weather was going to be poor today as it was raining  in Lichfield when we collected Charlie and co, we need not have worried  by the time Brian and Linda arrived at the camp site the weather was fine and warm  We had a good time and everybody enjoyed the BBQ and the chef (me) cooked a magnificent selection of meats, helped by assistant chef Michael (well he is the professional).
