Aurora Boralis Hunting!
Friday 11th September 2015
Another location tonight and having seen an old truck abandoned in a field near the village of Macoun about 20 kilometers from Estevan we thought we would give it a try. The Aurora Borealis forecast for tonight wasn’t brilliant and we spent the first hour just waiting, although I did photograph the old truck, “painting” it with light from my head-torch and there was a tiny glimmer of the Aurora showing spasmodically, plus, I did try using the interval timing controls on the camera with some success. With nothing showing at 21:35 we decided to leave and drove back along the “grid” road (a municipal road usually gravel, that follows a grid line established by the original survey of the area). We were nearing the main highway when both Rhiain and I noticed a “lighting” of the sky behind us and she stopped the car, wow, the Aurora had arrived with both swirls and spikes and we quickly got our tripods and cameras out. We photographed for about 10 minutes before we decided to drive back to our original location and we were able to take more photographs of the truck and a tree in the foreground of the Aurora before we drove back at just after midnight to Estevan, another great night of Aurora Borealis
